Web Intelligence versus Web Analytics

March 12th, 2009

Sometimes Web Analytics gets confused with Web Intelligence. Web Analytics looks into the usage behavior of visitors on a website. The art of Web Analytics has its roots in the classical log file analysis of web servers such as Apache. With Web Analytics the typical measurements are hits, file access, or visits. Web Analytics aims at optimizing the own website in terms of user acceptance, navigation patterns, conversion rates.

In contrast, Web Intelligence aims at gathering data, information and knowledge from the Web. Web Intelligence utilizes the content of Web pages, not the metadata that are generated in the context of website usage.
