All About Web Intelligence!

March 5th, 2009

All About Web Intelligence. In this blog we will investigate all topics that circle around the concept of Web Intelligence. As a start, we will give a definition of the concept Web Intelligence:

Web Intelligence focuses on the analysis of information extracted from web pages. In contrast to search engines, Web Intelligence systems do not locate relevant web pages given a set of keywords, but provide analysis of relevant information extracted from web pages in a structured way. Web Intelligence requires a more fine grained access to the web and moreover also requires access to the deep Web - which is hidden from search engines.

Web Intelligence solutions comprise an array of technologies to deliver the full power of the concept: Web data extraction provides the access layer to Web resources. This is comparable to the ETL layer in business intelligence applications. Once raw data are extracted, data from different web sources need to be integrated. This is an important prerequisite for the analysis part as data from the Web is usually less homogeneous than if extracted from structured sources. Once data are aligned analysis tools can be used to interpret the data.  Due to the nature of the Web we see a spectrum from free text oriented analysis to analysis of highly structured data records.

In a nutshell, Web Intelligence extends the information horizon available to organizations by taking information sources into account which are located outside of the corporate firewall. If the Web is the “largest database worldwide” then Web Intelligence is probably the largest analytical endeavor.
